IDL Introduction

The IDL (International Doom League) is a league open to all avid Doom players who enjoy competitive CTF. A regular season lasts over a period of 16 full weeks. The league is split into two conferences, the WDC (World Doom Conference) and the IDC (International Doom Conference). Within these Conferences, teams are split into divisions. The goal of each team is simple, beat everyone in your division in rankings, then win your conference, go on to the MasterBowl and prove that you are the best team in the IDL!

PRE-PLAY PREPARATIONS

Captain Selection

Two weeks before actual play in the IDL begins, captains will sign up and be selected in a random order. A set number of captains will be announced prior to the selection. If more than that number sign up to become captains, there is no guarantee that everyone will be awarded a captain position. Before you sign up for position of captain, ask yourself a few questions:

1) Will you be dedicated to the league and your team?
2) Will you make your best effort to stay in close contact with your teammates?
3) Will you make your best effort to stay in contact with your weekly opponents and make sure game times are set?
4) Most importantly, do you feel that you will make the best leadership decisions for your team if selected?

If you answered no to any of these questions, please do not sign up for a spot in the captains pool. There will be plenty of common player spots available. Captain eligibility is at the final discretion of the IDL administration.

The order in which captains are randomly selected is important to what happens during the next week (draft week) and what happens in the playoffs. Each captain will, after being selected, rank in order from Most favorable to Least favorable who they would like to draft from the common player pool. Whoever is drafted first will recieve First player pick and Last player pick from the common player pool as well as last homefield map advantage.Ex:

Doom_Marine is selected as a captain. He was selected 2nd. He would then rank the players he wants on his team the most to the ones he wants the least. He would do the same for map selection. During drafting, he would get the 2nd and 23rd picks from the common player pool. If the player he ranked as #1 in his draft ranking was picked before him however, he would then recieve the next person on his list.

Common Player Pool

Any player interested in joining the IDL can enter themselves into the common player pool. They must register on that season's designated forum and use the registration thread. It must contain five key pieces of information, your nickname, the country you play out of, your working email address (This will be checked), your instant messenger contact (Please include whether or not it is MSN, AIM, ICQ, or other), and whether or not you would like to register into the Captain Selection Pool (Use Y for yes, N for no). An example of registration:

Name: Ralphis
Country: USA
Email contact: ralphis@unidoom.org
Instant Message Contact: ralphissfr6 (AIM)
Captain Pool: Y

By entering yourself into the pool, there is no absolute guarantee that you will be drafted onto a team. However, you will be placed upon a reserve list in case you are needed to fulfill a vacant spot on the team.

Drafting

By the next week, 3 additional players will accompany their Team Captain and have a week to prepare and practice before the season opens the following week. During this week, teams will be required to provide a name for their team prior to the Season open. If there is an overabundance of players, any players not drafted will remain on a reserves list in case any players drop off a team during the season (not during trading weeks).

During the drafting process, captains have the option of trading up or down in the draft and may trade incentives to do this. The incentives are as follows:
1) Picks - You may trade a player for other picks. All captains must trade so that each team has four players at the end of the draft. 2) Mid-Season Draft Pick - Trading this to an opponent will leave you with zero picks in the Mid-Season Draft and should only be used as an incentive to trade upwards in the Pre-season draft. If you trade this, your opponent will have their mid-season draft pick (by their team standing) and your mid-season draft pick (by your standing).

SEASON GAMEPLAY

Season Overview

The IDL regular season lasts for 9 or 11 weeks (depending on Winter or Summer season) with each team recieving one bye week. Post-Season week 1 will begin the playoffs with the Wildcard round. Post-Season week 2 will hold the conference championship for both the IDC and the WDC. The final week will only hold the championship game, the Masterbowl.

+Gameplay

A standard IDL round is 3 vs 3 at 10 minutes each. Each round has a 5 flag limit. When the time limit is reached or the flag limit is reached, the team with the most points wins that round. Each IDL game goes for a minimum of two rounds. If a different team wins both the first and the second round, then a tie breaker round will occur. If another tie occurs, the game will result in a tie if the game is during the regular season, or both teams will begin another round if in a playoff/championship game. All 4 players on a team may be used during a match if they are alternated. There may never be 4 players from one team in a game at the same time. This will result in an instant disqualification of the round and all stats for that team will be set to 0. Players MUST record demos and players MUST NOT use aliases (all players must use the handle they signed up with).

+Byes

Bye weeks will begin on Week 3 and end on Week 8. Each team will be issued one bye week between weeks 3 and 8.

+HomeField Selection

Homefield selection will occur during week 7 and go according to the Pre-season draft order. Teams may not picked banned maps.
+Trading

The trading period begins immediately after the draft and concludes week 5 (NO EXCEPTIONS). Team captains are permitted up to THREE trades during this period, but only one per week. They may trade between another team or release a player for a Free Agent (All players currently on the reserve list are considered free agents). If a team has used up all three trades by Mid-Season Draft, they may not make a selection.

+Mid-Season Draft

During Week 3, Mid-season signups will begin allowing players not registered for the season to sign up for entry onto a team. On week 5, team records will determine the order in which each team will choose their draft picks. A team is not required to draft mid-season. Mid-Season picks may be traded for a player as long as another player accompanies the trade.

+Playoffs

The playoffs begin following the final regular season week of play. Four teams from each conference will be entered into brackets based on their performance throughout the season. Two divisional winners from each conference are automatically entered into the playoffs.

Two other teams will be eligible for playoff play through the wildcard. A wildcard team can be picked from any division. The two wildcard teams will be the 3rd and 4th strongest teams in their conference.

The Wildcard Round will be comprised of four total games (two in each conference). A team's ranking in the conference will determine who they play in the Wildcard. The strongest(1) playoff eligible team will play the weakest(4) playoff eligible team, while seeds (2) and (3) will face eachother. The games will be played on the (1) and (2) respective homefields.

Two winners from each conference will then advance into Post-Season week 2 where two total games will be played (one in each conference). These are known as the Conference Championships. The winner of each game will hold the title of Conference champion for the season.

In the final week, only one game will be played. The Conference champion of the WDC and the IDC will face off for the right to be named the best team of the season. This final game is named the MasterBowl. This is the final game of the post-season.

++Banned Maps

Each season, when wads are selected for play within the IDL, each wad is reviewed and certain maps are banned from being used as homefield maps during the playoffs. The following maps are banned from use:
ODACTF: Map05, Map08
THRTYTWO: Map02, Map03, Map06, Map11, Map14, Map15, Map18, Map20, Map21, Map23, Map25, Map26, Map28, Map29, Map30
ZDCTFMP: Map10
ZDCTFMP2: Map11, Map17, Map20
ZDCTFMP3: Map21, Map23, Map28, Map29, Map30

In addition, the MasterBowl map of the season may also not be used as a homefield.

++IDL Playoff Tiebreaking Prodecures

(February 10th, 2007) -- With the IDL aligned into four three-team divisions, the league adopted new tiebreaking rules.

The four postseason participants from each conference will now be seeded as follows:
1. The division champion with the best record.
2. The division champion with the second-best record.
3. The Wild Card club with the best record.
4. The Wild Card club with the second-best record.

The following procedures will be used to break standings ties for postseason playoffs and to determine regular-season schedules.

NOTE: Tie games count as one-half win and one-half loss for both clubs.

TO BREAK A TIE WITHIN A DIVISION
If, at the end of the regular season, two or more clubs in the same division finish with identical won-lost-tied percentages, the following steps will be taken until a champion is determined.

Two or More Clubs
1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the clubs).
2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division.
3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games.
4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
5. Strength of victory.
6. Strength of schedule.
7. Regular season Frag Average multiplied by regular season flag average.
8. Coin toss.

TO BREAK A TIE FOR THE WILD-CARD TEAM
If it is necessary to break ties to determine the two Wild-Card clubs from each conference, the following steps will be taken.
1. If the tied clubs are from the same division, apply division tie breaker.
2. If the tied clubs are from different divisions, apply the following steps.

Two Clubs
1. Head-to-head, if applicable.
2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games, minimum of four.
4. Strength of victory.
5. Strength of schedule.
6. Regular season Frag Average multiplied by regular season flag average.
7. Coin toss.

Three or More Clubs
(Note: If two clubs remain tied after third or other clubs are eliminated, tie breaker reverts to step 1 of applicable two-club format.)
1. Apply division tie breaker to eliminate all but the highest ranked club in each division prior to proceeding to step 2. The original seeding within a division upon application of the division tie breaker remains the same for all subsequent applications of the procedure that are necessary to identify the two Wild-Card participants.
2. Head-to-head sweep. (Applicable only if one club has defeated each of the others or if one club has lost to each of the others.)
3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games, minimum of four.
5. Strength of victory.
6. Strength of schedule.
7. Regular season Frag Average multiplied by regular season flag average.
8. Coin toss.

When the first Wild-Card team has been identified, the procedure is repeated to name the second Wild-Card, i.e., eliminate all but the highest-ranked club in each division prior to proceeding to step 2. In situations where three or more teams from the same division are involved in the procedure, the original seeding of the teams remains the same for subsequent applications of the tie breaker if the top-ranked team in that division qualifies for a Wild-Card berth.

OTHER TIE-BREAKING PROCEDURES
1. Only one club advances to the playoffs in any tie-breaking step. Remaining tied clubs revert to the first step of the applicable division or Wild-Card tie breakers. As an example, if two clubs remain tied in any tie-breaker step after all other clubs have been eliminated, the procedure reverts to step one of the two-club format to determine the winner. When one club wins the tie breaker, all other clubs revert to step 1 of the applicable two-club or three-club format.
2. In comparing division and conference records or records against common opponents among tied teams, the best won-lost-tied percentage is the deciding factor since teams may have played an unequal number of games.
3. To determine home-field priority among division titlists, apply Wild-Card tie breakers.
4. To determine home-field priority for Wild-Card qualifiers, apply division tie breakers (if teams are from the same division) or Wild-Card tie breakers (if teams are from different divisions).

If any ties cannot be broken by strength of schedule, the divisional or conference tie breakers, whichever are applicable, are applied. Any ties that still exist are broken by a coin flip.

League Requirements

Demos

It is a requirement of every player to record demos of EVERY match played and send them, preferably in a zip file, to an IDL administrator either through email, DCC, or uploading to a website. Captains should make sure to take extra precautions so that each of their active players records and reports their demo. Players that violate demo recording policies will be subject to the following disciplinary actions:

1) First Violation: Suspended from first round of the following week's match.
2) Second Violation: Suspended from the follow week's match.
3) Third Violation: Suspension for the remainder of the season.

Dismissal from the IDL

It is fairly difficult to get kicked out of the IDL, but bannable offenses are listed as follows:

1) Cheating. If you are caught cheating, you will be BANNED from all IDL servers and activities for the entirety of the season. Your application for future seasons will be heavily reviewed.
1b) If a cheater is found to be on a team, any match won with that player will be overturned and all stats for those games will be set to 0 for all games until the point that the cheater was apprehended. That player will then be suspended for the entire season and possibly barred from future seasons.
2) Chronic Absence. We understand that the IDL is part of a hobby and it may be impossible for you to attend all games. If you miss a game we will typically leave it up to the discretion of your team captain to decide whether or not to release you. We will usually not permit a release after only one absence from a game. Chronic Absence is defined and evaluated on a case by case basis and dismissal from the league is at the administrator's discretion.
3) Demo Violations. 3 demo report violations results in suspension from the league for a season. For more information, see League Requirements --> Demos.
